Description
CICONIA aims to improve understanding of non-CO2 emissions from current aircraft/engine technologies and their climate impacts, focusing on the development and evaluation of mitigation solutions. These solutions, which include new concepts of operations, will assess various operational and technical strategies with input from stakeholders such as airlines, air traffic control, and weather providers. The project willis evaluateing mitigation options for non-CO2 emissions, aiming to reduce their climate impact alongside CO2 emissions. The project encompasses four main topics:
- A weather service to enhance weather forecasting and long-term improvements for operational mitigation;
- A climate enabler to refine climate impact assessment models;
- The definition of concept of operations to integrate mitigation measures into operational planning, and - ATM mitigation solutions, focusing on reducing contrail-induced warming effects through operational trials.
These elements will contribute to developing a comprehensive approach to mitigating aviation’s non-CO2 effects. CICONIA also aims to provide material for regulators to guide rulemaking on non-CO2 emissions, ensuring measures are effective, economically fair, and operationally feasible. Additionally, a Sstakeholders Ooutreach Bbody will engage external organisations to participate in the project’s results, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing.
