The ASTAIR project aims to design a support tool to fully automate the supervision of airport ground operations. The partners will prototype a human-machine interface that uses algorithms to autonomously manage vehicle movements on the airport surface. The tool will allow controllers enough flexibility to locally adjust the algorithm rules to respond to operational events. The project envisions a cohesive operational environment that integrates both manual and autonomous functionalities, enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability in managing engine-off and conventional taxiing operations across major European airports. Through interactive tools and adaptive AI algorithms, ASTAIR seeks to increase the capacity of airport ground operations while reducing human workload and environmental impact. A human-centred approach is at the core of the project, promoting coordinated collaboration between human-controlled and automated processes. By leveraging operators' expertise, the system allows for varying levels of control and engagement with the automation, optimising the collaboration between humans and AI in the complex tasks of taxi management and operational control.
