From the 25-27 of November 2014, the SESAR (Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research) Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU), held its annual SESAR Innovation Days event at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Spain. The three day event put scientific research under the spotlight through a series of presentations, workshops, research exhibitions and networking events.

Around 300 participants attended the event, which was kindly hosted by the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the UPM with support from Eurocontrol - under the SESAR Long Term and Innovative Research Programme (WPE), and part of an agreed contribution and commitment to SESAR JU. Commenting on the event, UPM Professor Francisco Sáez Nieto, who is also Coordinator of the HALA! Network, said: “UPM was delighted to be able to host Europe’s leading ATM Research event and to be at the forefront of scientific research in ATM. The SESAR Innovation Days is the ideal platform for pooling together Europe’s ATM researchers and academics, allowing them to connect, exchange ideas and ultimately to make ATM modernisation a reality”.

This sentiment was echoed by, Florian Guillermet, Executive Director of SESAR JU, who opened the event by stating that “Research can only be considered as complete when it has been made available for other people to build on. This is exactly what the SESAR Innovation Days are all about – allowing people to engage and learn from each other’s work.”

A total of 30 papers were selected by a Programme Committee chaired by Dirk Schaefer, Eurocontrol who highlighted “the growing number and high quality of paper submissions received”.  The papers selected to be presented at the event were clustered into nine main themes:

  1. Complexity and Data Science
  2. Meteorology
  3. RPAS and Technical Enablers
  4. Capacity and Performance
  5. Risk and Security Assessment
  6. Human Factors and Decision Support Tools
  7. Modelling and Optimization
  8. Economics
  9. Resilience Engineering

The papers and their related presentations can all be downloaded from the official SESAR Innovation Days website.

On closing this year’s event, Peter Hotham, Chief Scientific Officer SESAR JU, highlighted that “it is encouraging to see the number and high quality of paper submissions received for this year’s event – the SESAR JU will continue to build on this momentum for fostering scientific excellence in ATM as we continue towards SESAR 2020.”

The planning for next year’s SESAR Innovation Days has already started and will take place in Bologna - from Tuesday 1 December to Thursday 3 December 2015 - stay tuned for more information…
