GNSS constellations like Galileo provide aircraft with the level of position accuracy to fly flexible and efficient precise flight paths. When satellite signals experience disruption or outage, aircraft navigate using alternative position, navigation and timing (A-PNT).
SESAR is examining selected alternatives to satellite-based navigation to support long-term outage or signals interruptions. This candidate solution aims to identify technological enablers for the A-PNT based on additional capabilities onboard aircraft or rotorcraft to provide increased position accuracy in GNSS denied or degraded environment.
The candidate solution is developing and verifying a terrain-aided en route navigation solution for rotorcraft based on the terrain map, radar altimeter, barometer and inertial sensors. The candidate solution will allow operations such as emergency medical services and/or search and rescue at low level IFR in degraded environments, for example in low visibility conditions due to fog in mountains areas, or when satellite signals are denied or degraded as a result of GNSS masking or multipath issues.
In addition, SESAR research aims to develop and verify a vision-based navigation solution applicable to aircraft, likely to be based on active radar sensors, to support the demanding requirements of approach flight phases in all weather conditions. This is also expected to benefit less equipped airports as it needs no additional ground infrastructure.
