At the SESAR 3 JU’s first annual conference, leaders from the aviation industry and European institutions discussed the role  that disruptive technologies can play in delivering a robust and sustainable airspace for Europe.

The COVID crisis has laid bare the limitations of Europe’s airspace and air traffic management, in terms of its scalability and ability to withstand external shocks, while climate change highlights the urgent need to reconcile aviation with a net zero world.

With the theme of ‘Airspace fit for the digital age’, this conference explored how the air transport industry can get back on its feet in a way that supports a sustainable and smart recovery, and strengthens the resilience of the sector.

The conference addressed questions such as:
•    Can technology make our airspace more sustainable?
•    Is Europe’s airspace ready to accommodate planes, drones and air taxis?
•    How can digitalisation help Europe’s aviation industry become more resilient to crises?
•    How can we make door-to-door mobility services fact not fiction?

Alongside the conference, members of the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking and SESAR 2020 partners exhibited their latest research and innovation results, prototypes and hardware, showcasing the need for the airspace to evolve and embrace new technologies.
