Munich Airport has been named the winner of this year’s Digital Transformation Award, a joint initiative between the SESAR Joint Undertaking and ACI EUROPE. The award recognises a European airport that has successfully embraced digitalisation, adopting innovative technologies and procedures to improve the safety, capacity, efficiency, and environmental footprint of its operations.
The award was announced during the ACI EUROPE Annual Congress and General Assembly on 19 June in Athens. The jury was impressed by Munich Airport’s “Premium Innovation Hub” strategy – a wide-reaching programme that combines automation, data-sharing and artificial intelligence to create future-proof operations and an enhanced passenger experience.
Notable developments include service robots, remote-operated jet bridges, AI-supported turnaround management, predictive incident management, digital allocation systems, and innovations in security control. Munich Airport was praised for fostering a strong internal digital community and for its collaborative ecosystem, which includes key partners such as Lufthansa, research institutes, IT providers, and other airports.
Jan-Henrik Andersson, Chief Commercial and Chief Security Officer at Munich Airport, welcomed the recognition:
"Munich Airport was one of the first airports of its size to introduce such a comprehensive and cross-functional approach to digital transformation. We are delighted that this commitment has been recognised with the Digital Transformation Award."
Commenting on the announcement, Andreas Boschen, Executive Director of the SESAR Joint Undertaking, said:
"Let me also congratulate another SESAR JU member – Munich Airport – on winning the Digital Transformation Award, a reflection of how airports are embracing innovation with ambition and purpose."
Athens International Airport was also highly commended in this category for its continued efforts to harness digital technologies for improved airport performance.
