Aerodays 2015: SESAR highlights essential role of ATM in securing high performing aviation for Europe

Aerodays is the European flagship event in aviation research and innovation which takes place once during each EU Research Framework Programme. The event is organised by the European Commission DG for Research and Innovation. The 2015 event marked the 7th European Aeronautics Days and was held from 20-23 October in London. The event presented strategic perspectives for aviation, including research and innovation, sharing achievements of collaborative research and innovation in aeronautics and air transport. The event was an opportunity to showcase the strategic importance of ATM in the entire aviation value chain. The SESAR JU participated in this event and showcased projects in the fields of Green ATM, RPAS and ATM Safety. The presentations of which can be downloaded below. Violeta Bulc, EU Commissioner for Transport, provided some encouraging remarks by stressing the importance of SESAR in ensuring an efficient aviation system for Europe and reminded the audience that it is the most significant R&I transport investment by the European Commission, an investment that is already delivering, she added. The SJU also organised a High Level Forum to explain the SESAR Programme in depth, focussing on a number of key developments in terms of SESAR Solutions and what’s to be expected with the future SESAR 2020 programme. The presentation can be downloaded here. The SJU’s Executive Director, Florian Guillermet, closed the conference by reminding people of the importance of a high performing ATM system for Europe by stating that “you can build fantastic airplanes and engines but if you can't fly them efficiently in Europe’s airspace you lose all the benefits.” The event also hosted an exhibition and a SESAR stand provided participants with an opportunity to find out the latest on SESAR and featured two interactive presentations: Partnering for Smarter Aviation SESAR’s member NATS showcased a suite of SESAR projects that they are involved in which are helping to deliver a Single European Sky. For example, demonstrations of the Cross-Border Arrival Management system (XMAN) at Heathrow showcased how the SESAR concept of Extended Arrival Management is being applied in an operational environment and delivering fuel savings to airlines today. A second demonstration on NATS deployment of Time Based Separation (TBS) at London Heathrow demonstrated how this tool has enabled NATS to increase capacity and improve efficiency at the World’s busiest dual-runway airport.
