The SESAR JU’s Administrative Board under the chairmanship of Matthias Ruete, Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy and Transport, mandated the SESAR JU to provide an evaluation and impact assessment aiming at the extension of the SESAR JU. The duration of the SESAR JU was set in its founding regulation (Council regulation (EC) No 219/2007) until 31 December 2016. The future remit of the SESAR JU could include new areas such as research and innovation aspects of air transport infrastructure as well as the continuous maintenance of the European ATM Master Plan. Preliminary results of the SESAR JU assessment will be presented to the Administrative Board in its meeting of 3 July, while the final impact assessment should be made available to the European Commission by the end of July. The European Commission will then start the necessary institutional processes which will result in a proposal to the Council and the European Parliament. A final decision amending the SESAR JU regulation can be expected by mid-2013.
